Chapter 17

Maddie sighed as she zipped her suitcase. She had been waiting for the last thirty-six hours for over a month—in a sense, for her entire life and she was not looking forward to leaving. The time with Austin had gone too fast. She hated to go back to the real world and their separate lives connected only by phone or electronic communication.

“Can we just stay here forever?”

“Of course, if that’s what you want.” He walked over and wrapped his arms around her.

“Okay, I know it’s not going to happen today. Do you think we will ever be able to be together? I mean really together.”

“Mad, I promise at some point we will be together. I love you, so we’ll make it work.”

He reached over with both hands and brushed the hair back from her face. He leaned down to kiss her and then pulled back to look directly into her eyes.

“Okay.” She didn’t bother trying to hide the sadness in her eyes. For good measure, she put out her bottom lip.

He laughed. “I imagine that works on some people, but I’m not as easy as the rest of them.” He teased, but didn’t do a good job of hiding the truth in his eyes. Maddie knew he was struggling as much as her.

They stopped by the winery, so she could say a quick goodbye to Frank and thanks to the family for everything. Maddie had talked to Austin about Frank’s invitation to spend time with him learning all about the winery including the business side. Maddie was seriously considering taking a couple of months away from work to spend time at the winery. Even though she knew they might not be able to hold her job, she needed time away from everything. The last couple of months, well, almost year, had been hard on her and she wanted to take time for herself to continue healing. She hated to be far away, but Ashley was still so young, so Maddie didn’t think she would miss too much.

They were both flying American and their flights were within thirty minutes of each other. Austin had arranged for a private conference room in the Admiral’s Club lounge, so they could have lunch without anyone interrupting them. By the time they finished eating it was almost boarding time for Maddie’s flight. They gathered their stuff up and headed toward the gate. On their way, two young girls walked up to Austin.

“Hey, Austin. Could we, like, get your autograph?” Both girls giggled.

Maddie looked at the two of them. They couldn’t be more than eighteen. The girl who had spoken had on tight black shorts with an inseam of no more than two inches. She had on a black and white corset top. It was so fitted Maddie could have sworn it was painted on. Her dark hair had professional auburn highlights and was up in a sophisticated do. Her make-up was heavy, but applied flawlessly.

The friend was a petite blonde with her hair down in loose curls.
